Holler Dollar: Glitter Toes

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Next week Sarah and I are flying out to look after our sisters kids, so she can go to New York for a week with her hubby. In prep for many nights of nail painting with the little ladies, I decided to stock up on a few faves, and of course I couldn’t resist trying a few newbies.

My favorite for sure is “Sparked” by Wet n Wild.  Looks as good as glitter toes, doesn’t need a top coat, and doesn’t chip!  Perfect for a three year old! And at only 99 cents it’s hard to beat. Thanks Alex and Jen for the recommendation!

Oh, and If you have 8 minutes, watch THIS girl’s review of Wet and Wild Nail polish.  It’s hilarious and informative :)

Pedestal Accent Table

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

I love a great Pedestal table, I think I inherited this love from my mother.  I’m actually thinking about all the round tables we’ve ever had,  and I think the phrase “slight obsession” is a better description.  It is a classic piece you know you can buy, put anywhere, and will never go out of date.

Pedestals look great flanking a bed.  Somehow it makes the bedroom feel more formal.  Do any of you like this look too?  I’m hoping to have a pair in my guestroom someday.

A pedestal accent table looks adorable nestled next to a sofa or chair in a living room.  Side tables right next to where you are sitting makes a cozy little place stow your drink, magazines and remotes (Sarah and I especially love using trays like the one below).

Isn’t that last pic amazing?!  What a gorgeous pedestal table and slip-covered wing-back chairs!   I am definitely needing a little pedestal next to my wing-back chair.  Hmm, that actually reminds me of something…

I’ve been eyeing this little guy at Target for some time.  For $79 I think  it is a good deal, one problem:  squishing it in one very full living room.

Rumor has it that it’s on sale, 50% off.  I think I may have to give it a try.  How about you?

Holler Dollar: Brown Paper Package

Monday, September 26th, 2011

Don’t you just love the simplicity of Brown paper and twine? To me, it can never get old. This version found at the Dollar Tree adds just a little flare to classic, with a white design.

The tag was made with just a scrap of card stock + ribbon, and the cute font stamps are from the dollar section at Walmart.

Do you guys have any finds for a buck? If so, we’d love so feature them.

Yes to Checks!

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

A few days ago Sar and I visited the lovely Calico Corners fabric store where I found a bolt of clearance check fabric reduced from $39/yard to $1.99!  I am planning on it for some throw cushions for the living room to really cozy things up for the fall, but I was dying to use it immediately.  Sar had the idea of hanging a strip behind our bed.

This piece of fabric cost $4! It goes great with our new fab lamps and creates a statement I like for the fall.

Crazy Deal on Watkins Hand Soap!

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

Remember Sarah’s post on Watkins produts?  We are totally in love with Watkins’ pretty packaging and lovely scents.  This week at Rite Aid all Watkins products are 2/$3 !!!  Usually these soaps are around $5, this is the lowest price we’ve ever seen!  Head over to your local Rite Aid, with a deal this crazy they’re going to sell out soon!

PS. If they are sold out, don’t forget to ask for a raincheck.

Martha Stewart: Checks Please

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

Talking of the magazines, I got two new ones yesterday (the best low-key evenings start like that). Martha arrived, and as always I’m loving her cozy fall ideas.

I was especially taken with the Check inspired projects. Take a peek:

The screen is to die for, so cozy. I’m thinking this is a must-do project for this fall.

I’m a huge fan of coasters, they can add the smallest splash of fun and character. I’m loving bright tread in these.

A tiled check backsplash…genius!

I’m inspired to bring on out the gingham for fall…are you?

A Jacket for Fall

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

I’ve been wondering recently, when am I going to feel like a proper grown up? At 31 I thought it would have happened by now, but I swear I still feel as immature and innocent as I did when I was 21. Perhaps it will happen when we have kids?

Then yesterday it suddenly hit as I was tidying up. I noticed all my magazines are all “mature-older-people type” Martha Stewart, Country Living and Good Housekeeping. When did these sneakily become my fave? Where’s In Style and the Gossip mags? And to top it off, I’d just made an order at Lands End that I’m very excited about. Too excited in fact, I’m sharing with you all.

I’ve been keeping my beady eyes on THIS jacket for a while, last week it was reduced to $29.99 (from $99) and yesterday they announced a three day sale of an extra 25% total order + free shipping. Just use code: DISCOVER and pin: 6956 at checkout. My total was $24…whoot, whoot!

Out of excuses, I ordered. Now I’m excited to see it in person.

I also have been looking this wool cotton throw $19.99 + this linen pillow case $9.99, even lower with the 25% off…but I’m resisting!

This morning I danced around (while making my bed) to Lady Gaga’s The Edge of Glory. Then reminded myself my last online buy was from Urban Outfitters, and decided being a grown up is great, coz I get to do exactly what I feel like, even if that’s acting like a granny or a teenager at any given moment!

Fall Movies

Monday, September 19th, 2011

I love a good movie to get me in the mood for a season, and I have a couple of trusty faves for fall.

The first, is one of my favorite movies of all time: When Harry Met Sally. I watch this movie over and over again, I just love the interaction between the two characters; any movie that you can laugh and cry at is a winner in my book. New York in the fall is a perfect setting for the most heart-warming part in the movie, when two finally become friends.

The second movie, is Stepmom. I was talking about this with my sister the other day, because neither of us really love or relate the story line but we both watch and enjoy. For me, I think it’s the coziness of the home that Susan Sarandon character creates: home cooked meals, handmade costumes, school plays, and hanging out in pj’s.

(all of the above images found on imdb.com)

As far as movie houses are concerned, I’d choose the east coast home in Marley & Me for my fall residence.

Doesn’t it look perfect to host a Thanksgiving feast?

Wendy’s Free Frosty’s

Friday, September 16th, 2011

Wendy’s is for sure my go-to place for lunch.  It’s only one mile away from work and offers lots of gluten-free options.  The other day while going through the drive-thru I eyed a deal.  Purchase a $1 frosty keyring and receive a free Jr frosty whenever you show your keyring until the end of the year.  Probably not the greatest deal for you waistline, but awesome for the budget :)

Guess What?! He found Me a Dualit!!!

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Remember my slight obsession with this lovely kitchen appliance?  Well….I came home on Saturday and guess what was waiting for me?

Yes, I have the best hubby in the world!  And yes, he found me a Dualit for $3 at a local thrift store!  It needs a little TLC and we need to buy the sandwich cages, and soon it will look like this:

It’s going to be so great and I couldn’t be happier.  Thanks Bradley, I owe you big time!

Lacey Tight Vases

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

These days there are so many fun tights around, that I find myself wearing them every Sunday in the cooler months. As they tend to be on the pricey side, I hate it when I get a hole or ladder in them.

While clearing out my drawers this summer I couldn’t bare to throw away a couple of pairs I’d recently ruined, I didn’t know how or if I could even use them again, I just knew they weren’t ready for the bin.

I’m not quite sure when or how this idea popped into my head, but I’ve been waiting for the Halloween season to try it out…and voila here it is.

This is the easiest project ever, and takes about…ohhh 50 seconds.

Simply gather a vase or hurricane (6″-7″ diameter works best), and slip it into the leg of tights, then trim bottom and top leaving only about 1/2′ extra on each end. The tights hold themselves in place, and there you have it…done!

Easy Peasy!

DIY Halloween Wreath

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

Are you guys feeling the crispy air in the mornings? I am.

I thought it was just about time to make a couple of Halloween wreaths to hang from my front windows. Although, I probably won’t put them out for another week or two.

I’m not completely loving how they turned out, I may just trade in the crow for a big black silk ribbon, but I did have lots of fun making them. I got most of my supplies from the Dollar Tree, I think they’re halloween selection is pretty amazing for a buck.

I simply: spray painted my grapevine wreath black, glue gunned moss to it, sprayed the moss black, then added the crow and ribbon.

For two wreaths it cost me about $8 total, not too shabby.

New patterns + textures for fall

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

Yesterday I motivated myself to do a deep clean in my living room. I cleared out all the furniture, then dusted and vacuumed every inch. Since I was moving heavy furniture anyhow I decided to rearrange the room, and I’m loving the results. Changing things around can bring a breath of new life into old items, but the real fun is adding a few new items!

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago my sister in law Kimberly (see her blog HERE) was making me some new pillow cushions, well they’re done, and I am LOVING them.

I also purchased the West Elm Pillow I mentioned HERE, and the brown shaggy rug is from Urban Outfitters HERE 3×5 for only$25…deal!!!

It’s rare for me to add colour and patterns, texture is always my safety zone, but I think everything is looking great so far.

I’m not finished with the mini makeover, so I’ll show you the whole room later. I just have to wait another week or two before I can get the pine cones out!

Inbox Deals + Freebies

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

Do you enjoy checking your inbox? I have a love-hate relationship with mine. Like a lot of people I have a separate email addresses for my personal emails, and then one for everything else. The “everything else” inbox can fill up rather fast, so I try to keep tabs on emails by only signing up for those stores I like the most, and unscubscriping to everything else.

Joining company’s email lists can be lucrative in lots of ways. I love seeing the previews of a new line, along with knowing about upcoming sales and events; but what I enjoy most are the discount and freebies that land in my email frequently.

My favorites today are:

3 Free music downloads from World Market

I choose: The Sweetest Thing (Camera Obscura), I’ll Be Waiting (Adele), and Let’s Just Fall In Love Again (Jason Castro).

BOGO Burrito at Rubio’s:

This makes for an inexpensive meal for the two of us. I’ll be ordering my fave, the chili-lime wild salmon burrito…yum!

Like with many companies both World Market and Rubio’s offer goodies just for signing up. For the World Market Expolorer Club see HERE, you’ll get a 10% off purchase coupon. For Rubio’s Beach Club see HERE, and you’ll get a free fish taco.

What company emails do you enjoy? I may need to sign up!

Excited for Fall

Crisp leaves, pumpkins, chunky Aran sweaters, and making soups and stews (I found in an orange Le Creuset at a thrift store!), are just a few reasons why I’m eager for the season change.  What are you excited for?

Balloon Ice Packs

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

I had to squeeze this clever idea in, before the last BBQ’s of the year. It came from the August issue of Good Housekeeping, and I couldn’t wait to give it a try.

Use regualar size balloons, fill about 1/4 with tap water, freeze overnight and use in a barrel to keep your drinks cool.

There’s a couple of things I love about this: you don’t get your hands wet when you reach for a drink, and it’s a easy way to add your colour theme without much effort.

………………………..

What will you be up to this weekend?

We’re off to Midway to check out Swiss Days, we’re happy not to be having a booth this year, but a little sad at the same time.

…………………………

If you’re heading to the shops or online to snag some deals, don’t forget to check out these bargains from some of our favorite locals stores:

Downeast: take an additional 30% off home + clothing clearance. See ad HERE.

Roberts Craft: take 50% off total purchase (Mon only). Good time to start thinking about fall/winter projects. See ad HERE.

Whatever you’re doing, we hope you enjoy with family + friends. We’ll see you Tuesday.

Happy Long Weekend!
