Holler Dollar + Local Love: Thanksgiving Point Ice Cream

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Thanksgiving Point is known for a lot of things, like: weddings, the gardens, or the dinosaur museum. But what you may not know, is that it has the most affordable ice cream in town.

A cup of soft serve is only 50¢, then the additional toppings are 25¢ and 15¢ depending. My favorite combo is vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, heath bar, and it’s only 90¢ total! Em’s go-to is chocolate ice cream, hot fudge sauce, and reeces cups, also 90¢.

The only downside is, that it’s impossible to resist…so we often don’t!

Small Space Storage Solutions: My Nightstand

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

Today I am going to share how they are one of my storage solutions for living in a small spaces. Remember my love of glass cabinets? They are my new favorite thing to help things keep orderly around here.

By using glass cabinets with containers inside to categorize different items it is easy to create a highly functional space. A glass door is ideal to close on the clutter, and being able to see what you need clearly is a number one priority in maintaining order.

My Mum found these nightstands on clearance at Target when we were engaged. They were pretty, insanely cheap and had a lot of storage..sold! I have absolutely loved them.

Everything I need for my bedtime routine is just an arm’s reach away plus their is plenty of extra storage for small things (secret stash of chocolate).

Surprisingly, this space stays way more organized than any other cupboard in the apartment. Having a glass door forces you to put things where they’re supposed to be. The sides of this cabinet are also glass, creating a light so nothing can get lost.

Most importantly, closing that cabinet door and having all that clutter contained helps me breathe a little easier in our tiny space. For those of you struggling with space..you need a few glass cabinets in your life!

Holler Dollar: Patriotic Cupcake Linners

Thursday, May 24th, 2012

There’s something very Americana about summer. It must be all the patriotic holidays.

Red, White and Blue can be found all over the place this time of year, and cupcakes should be no exception! These liners and decorative flags are from the Dollar Tree. That’s right; they were only a dollar for a pack of 24 pairs…holler!

Don’t you think it makes the cupcake extra cheeky?

Along with Memorial Day and the 4th of July, these also might come in handy for the Olympic Games. I’d love to get a hold of some Union Jack ones–anyone seen any?

PS. I finally got around to making THIS recipe I’d pinned ages ago. Banana cupcakes and cream cheese frosting…yum yum! :)

A Modern Baby Shower: Invitations

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012

A friend of mine is having her first baby, a boy. The couple has had his name picked out for years: Aston (as in Aston Martin, the famous British luxury sports car).

After seeing their nursery (it’s amazing), I was inspired to throw them a modern baby shower, with a little racetrack theme thrown in.

We headed to Gygi in SLC for some inspiration, and before we knew it, we’d designed the invitations.

The invites became little packages, and a perfect sneak peak for the upcoming shower.

We wrapped them with some bakers twine and a personalized tag, and voila! Simplicity always works best!

We were SO happy with our experience at Gygi. We just LOVE going into a store and finding everything we need. But even better, it’s a place where our heads can get ticking and inspiration flows freely!

We’re also excited to announce that our friends over at Gygi are offering our readers a 10% discount through their online store (whoot whoot!) found HERE. Simply use the code ‘BOXWOOD10′ at check out.

Their prices are already the best around, so with this additional discount you’ll be scoring some mega deals…holler holler! Also, it’s good to note that although the discount is only good online, you can pick up your purchase at the store to avoid shipping costs. :)

The items we used today were: the boxes HERE. The gum balls, HERE. And the twine HERE.

We hope you LOVE this store as much as we do. Now go shop!

Pool Totes

Monday, May 21st, 2012

I am more than a little excited for summer to begin and this weekend I couldn’t help but shop around for a pretty and affordable tote.

Every summer I have a designated pool bag that I can keep ready to head out the door. I also use a lot of totes in the summer to pack a blanket, book and snack for the park, to take with me when I want to walk to the grocery store to pick up just a few things, and to haul teaching supplies and scriptures etc to church.

Black and Cream Patent $12 | Black and Cream Colorblock $34.80

I don’t think you can ever tire of  a classic cream and black color combo and these both would go perfect with the Old Navy black retro suit. I am especially loving that rope handle and faux-patent leather trim one.

If you need a little color in your life these pinky/orange stripey totes are pretty.

Coral Colorblock $34.80  | Orange Stripe $10.80 | Papaya Stripe Boardwalk $49.50

Lastly, of course I had to throw a few summery nautical stripes in there. Love ‘em.

Blue Stripe $10.80 |Navy Stripe Boardwalk $49.50 | High Seas $20.80

I couldn’t believe the deals out there. Do you love a good tote as much as me?

Time to Swim 2012

Friday, May 18th, 2012

Summer is just around the corner and pool time is rapidly approaching…

galadarling.com

Are you ready? I certainly am not. A nice little spray tan might be in order before heading to the poolside as well as a nice and modest swimsuit, and I’ve found just the one…

Old Navy Control Max Halter Swimsuit

Most swimsuits of this caliber will run you well over $100 smackaroos. This one is pleasantly priced at $39.94 in stores and $44.94 online.

It’s adjustable straps, both front and back ruching, and swim-dress style make this a pretty and flattering swimsuit for any early summer, less than confident figure.

Of course I got it in black, but the pinky red, or pretty blue are fun options.

This Blouson swimsuit also from Old Navy is very adorable. Very anthropologie-esk.

Now all we need is a new, cute pool bag!

Gift Idea: Monogrammed Towels

Thursday, May 17th, 2012

I’ve mentioned before that one year for Christmas our sister Helen gave us all monogrammed bath towels. To this day I think it’s one of the best gift ideas ever, and a go-to gift for anyone.

Recently, I’ve enjoyed giving these for wedding gifts, as they are personal and affordable.

The towels pictured below are my fave. They are from Costco and are usually priced at $6.99 each, but right now there’s a $2 off coupon (available at guest services if you didn’t get one in the mail) lowering the price to only $4.99!

I’m not kidding when I say these towels are lush, I’d even compare them to THESE towels that are $19 each.

I usually stock up when there’s a coupon, and leave them in my gift closet until it’s time for them to be embroidered. Google local embroidery places to find your nearest stop, and expect to pay somewhere between $4 – $6 per towel.

So there you have it, around $20 for a customized gift. Not bad me thinks!

Charlotte Russe $5 Accessories

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

I’m not the glamourous sissy; Em by far has the most inner Beyonce out of all of us. She rocks the locks and hooped earings pretty darn well, while miss freckles here sticks to studs at the most.

While strolling through the mall yesterday, we noticed Charlotte Russe has a great sale going on right now, all jewelry $5! It wasn’t long before we both found a couple of fun pieces.

Em’s bought 2 earring collections, priced at $5 for 6 pairs! Similar to this:

accept one collection had hoops, so she gave me a pair to tryout.

I hate it when people say they can’t pull off a look. I think it’s great when people are changing things up and trying new things. But I’m really not sold on this look for me, what do you guys think?

My purchase was in my comfort zone, sunglasses. I broke my favorite pair last week :( but was happy to see that they too were on sale for only $5 each. The aviators were screaming for me to take them home, so I obliged!

Accessories really can be the fastest, cheapest way to spruce up your look. So go check out the sale, and I dare you to try something new!

Target Tuesday

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

Have you seen the Shops at Target? It is such a fun collection from five stores across the country. Target has done a great job at choosing stores that convey a wide array of tastes and products from the beaches of Miami to the mountains of Aspen.

My absolute favorite item is this small plate from Privet house in Connecticut.

Privet House at Target white embossed appetizer plate (set of four $15.99)

I am dying for these plates! I would use them for petite desserts or for small gourmet salads.

I quickly browsed over this next item online. There seems to be poufs everywhere, so I wasn’t too excited to see Privet House offering them at Target.

It wasn’t until I saw them at the store that I realized how incredible they are! They are well-made, attractive, have a delightful texture and are super comfy. The small size is perfect for ottoman use, and perfect for extra seating when you have a full house.

Privet House at Target pouf (Small $69.99) (Large $159.99)

This little embroidered dress reminds me of embroidery from the 80′s. I love it! Wish I had a little girl to put in it.

The Webster at Target Infant Embroidered Dress $14.99

Lastly, on my last trip to Target I picked up these cute Mossimo sandals that I’ve been eyeing online for a while. They are super comfortable and look great with shorts, skirts and jeans. I am so happy with them.

Winifred braided sandal $14.99

Spring Gallery Wall

Monday, May 14th, 2012

This weekend I finally got around to hanging my gallery wall project of thrift store frames.

I am constantly fighting between cottage cozy and sophisticated glam in my home. I was really trying to for an imperfect blend of mixed wood and pretty florals to bring a little more ‘cottage’ and spring vibe into the house. Please excuse the pic as the professional wasn’t around…

As always, I used Command picture hanging strips to hang the frames so I didn’t have to put so many holes in the wall.

Can you imagine trying to get all the nails in exactly the right spots for correct spacing in between frames? What a nightmare!

These guys are the way to go, super fast and easy. Read all about them here.

I love not having to make design choices around pre-existant holes in the wall!

We’ll see how long it takes before Brad complains about a wall full of flowers hanging in the living room, I’ll keep you posted if the frames need a new home!

Happy Mother’s Day 2012

Friday, May 11th, 2012

We were raised in a humongo family and bustling household. But our mother still managed to install in us: the love of creating new things, to find beauty in everyday life, to go crazy over a bargain, and to organize our lives & spaces around the things that matter most.

Without her there would be no Boxwood, nor two sisters following the same dream.

Thank you Mummy for loving us, teaching us, and inspiring us.

We hope you have a lovely weekend celebrating all the wonderful women in this world.

Ikea Monthly Deal: Expedit Bookcase

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

In our books, Ikea is the go-to place for almost everything. But if you needed only one reason to go, we’d say the Expedit Bookcases would be it.

I know you’re thinking, not those bookshelfs again! Yes, we know we’ve mentioned them a lot, but we just can’t get over how versatile they are. They can literally be in any home, and work for any style.

Not only do they look good, but they are by far the best tool in organizing your space. We recommend them to every client, and so now to you (again!).

This month with your Ikea family card, this size is down from $69 to $59

I’m thinking one in my closet would be great, with my stacked jeans and chunky sweaters.

Here’s how Jessie over at Cape 27 used it in her nursery to double as a changing station and dresser.

See, versatile right?!

If you have one in your home we’d love to see how you’ve put it to use. Mail us a pic at mail [at] boxwoodclippings [dot] com.

Copy Cat: Pottery Barn vs. Target Jewelry Tote

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

I’m not one to wear or have a lot of jewelry, but I do really like jewelry boxes especially the ones at Pottery Barn. There’s something about the milky creams and silver accents that call my name, and perhaps one day I’ll have need for one.

This box from Pottery Barn has caught my eye for a couple of years, it’s priced at $39.00.

While strolling thru Target a week or so ago, I spied this little copy cat, priced at just $19.99, BUT this week it’s on sale for only $16!

If any of you are still looking for a Mother’s Day gift, I’d say look no further!

Turned Leg Bench from Ballard Designs

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

I am loving turned leg and spindle furniture the last couple of years. It reminds me of side tables we had in our house growing up, and is a style I think will always be around.

I was happy to discover this beauty on sale in the recent Ballard Designs catalog:

The Simone Bench is on sale from $299 to $219 in basketweave fabric. Check out that pretty grey! This would be a lovely choice to use as an ottoman, as an entry bench, or at the end of a bed. Just lovely…

DIY Coffee Filter Letters

Monday, May 7th, 2012

Good morning everyone, I hope you all had a beautiful weekend.

This morning I’d like to share a project that posted over at  Lil Luna last week. I was too excited about it not to share on here also.:)

…………………

A couple of years ago, I made a coffee-filter and cupcake-liner wreath that still hangs in my living room today (see HERE). Although it was quite a time-consuming project, the results were well worth it, and I’ve always wanted to make more.

This time I thought I’d mix it up a bit, and make letters instead of a regular wreath. The letters could be used as a single monogram, but I decided, “why not create a whole word, like ‘LOVE’?”

Again, I’m really pleased with the results and have already thought of many different ways I can use this both in the home, and for parties. But best of all, the whole project cost under $12! Holler, holler!

To make this project you will need:

About 200 coffee filters ($1.25 at Walmart)

Cardboard (I just used a shipping box I had: $0!)

Glue Gun and Sticks (I had the gun, $5 on glue)

About half a swimming noodle per letter ($1 each at the Dollar Tree)

Pencil and Scissors.

 HOW TO MAKE THE BASE:

HOW TO ADD COFFEE FILTERS:

(Just ignore my wonky accent, videos are so embarrassing :)

Don’t you think this would be spectacular at a wedding? I do!
