House Hunting

We are steadily getting closer to buying a house! I have especially been looking forward to this for some time, and now that we’re finally getting closer I am totally overwhelmed.

  • Budget?
  • Location?
  • Old house vs new?
  • Yard and lot size?
  • Number of bedrooms?

Yikes! And that is just the beginning of the list!

The dream of course is to find a little house with a white picket fence that feels like home at a price that won’t break the bank.

Reality: That little dream house in our dream location is out of the question. We need to prioritize, and I need your help figuring it out!

In your experience what have you found to be the most important in the house search. Location vs square footage?  Old character vs a new reliable build?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I think storage is one of the things we often times over look until you start unpacking. With years of experience living in apartments, condos, and homes, I finally realized it doesn’t really matter the square footage as long as there is room to get organized. Now, I always look to see if there is adequate kitchen and bathroom storage. I also prefer houses that are not on a busy street and homes with a comfortable, private back yard.

You’re right. There is a lot to consider. You’ll find things you like in lots of homes. However, in the end… it’s a matter of how the home feels to you. As you look around, you’ll find the right fit… you will find a place that will feel like home.

Good luck in your search!! How exciting :)

Oh, btw… be sure and have a radon test performed before you purchase any home. :)

I have to say location is number one – the only reason I haven’t gone round the bend in my 1100 sq foot house is because I love where it is and we can go outside and enjoy the countryside and my neighborhood is nice (this is very important). Storage is a big problem though so I agree, make sure there is a lot of it no matter what the size. Also, I would go with a new build or near enough new because the houses in Utah are not built to last and I hear of so many people with older homes that have issues with plumbing and electric work but if you have a handy man around, it should be ok. good luck!!

Daniel and I always prefer older homes because we appreciate established neighborhoods and landscaping. Location is so crucial, you could fix up your house bit by bit to make it your dream.

How exciting, fun and nerve-racking all at the same time! :) I have heard if you do build, to make sure to check out the builder. This can make all the difference. You don’t want them to cut corners at your expense. It seems like newer homes will have less problems but only if you start with a good builder. Such a hard decision…..older homes usually have charm and character, big trees and established neighbors….aahhhhhhh. Such a dilemma! Stay calm and try to think down the road. :) Good luck! You will make a great decision!

I have moved SEVERAL times since being married. We have 4 children and the kids that they were associated with and the schools that they attended have always been top priority. You haven’t started your family yet but keep in mind the schools and friends that your future children will be associated with. We have been blessed to find a home that really feels like home every time we have moved. Some have taken awhile to find but we have truly been blessed. Make it a matter of prayer and you will be amazed how you will be guided in your search for the perfect home. Good luck! I love your ideas and blog. :)

I’m feeling your anxiety, some people say when you find the perfect house you’ll just know, well the only 2 houses we just felt right about are out of our price range and the other one is sold, plus where we live the market is bleak at best, here’s hoping the one out of our price range will drop to just the right price at just the right time and not be sold! Hope your search goes better than ours! It keeps me up at nights!
