Design Dilemma: Master Bedroom

Thursday, January 31st, 2013

Our client, Lisa approached us needing help with her master bedroom. She has just moved in to a beautiful brand new home and having a hard time visualizing her master bedroom around her existing furniture.

As she is finishing and furnishing the whole house right now we need to help her create a great space with minimal costs. We’ll accomplish this by three huge bang-for-your-buck changes:

boxwood clippings_lisa's room inspiration board1. Paint: Hands down paint is the least-expensive option to update a room. We’ve chosen a warm gray to modernize the space that will compliment the creamy furniture and create a warm and inviting environment.

2. Linens: The bed is the main feature of a master bedroom and we’ll be adding a few layers of linens to scream comfort.

3. Large Modern Lamps: With the chunky furniture already present in the room modern accents are a must to add a hint of sophistication and glamor to this master suite. Large lamps are definitely needed to flank the master bed and ground the large furniture in the space.

We will be shopping the sales to make sure this room turns out fabulous with just three changes and a minimal budget, we’ll keep you posted on the result!

Please let us know if you would like help with a design dilemma or consultation. We can work with any budget. Please email us at mail [at] boxwoodclippings [dot] com.

Winnie’s Workshop

Tuesday, January 29th, 2013

Last weekend we escaped the inversion and headed up to the mountain village of Midway, Utah to attend Winnie’s Workshop Valentine’s class and boy, did we have fun…

Winnie’s Workshop is a picturesque country barn owned by mother and daughter duo, Nancy and Meredith who’ve put their heart and soul into making this space a crafter’s heaven.

Nancy, a life-long seamstress, has a larger than life personality and is currently teaching classes on quilting and felting what she calls “wacky woollies”.

Meredith has a bachelors in print-making, a masters in visual art, and is currently teaching classes on letter-pressing and bookbinding.

We were warmly greeted into a Valentine retreat with Nancy at the sewing machine, stitching bright wool hearts to pillow covers, Meredith warming up the vintage letterpress with red ink, and the workshop adorned in heart garlands and fabric, cards, and ribbons galore all ready for us to start crafting!

For the next three hours we made our own letter-pressed Valentine’s cards and crafts, munched on delicious snacks, chatted and laughed, and enjoyed the beautiful and quaint surroundings of the Midway valley and mountains. It was a day to remember, that’s for sure!

Holler Dollar: Best Tweezers Ever!

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013

boxwood clippings_holler dollar

We haven’t done a holler dollar in over a month, have you guys noticed that many stores have upped their prices in their dollar sections? We’re not impressed.

However I eventually found a good buck to blog about…these Sally Hansen ‘Little Details’ tweezers have been my fave for years, but I’ve recently had a hard time finding them in my usual stores. I was ridiculously excited when I found them at the Dollar Tree, and for only a dollar…holler! (Usually $4)

These are a must for any makeup bag and possibly the best dollar you’ll ever spend!

A Pink, White and Silver Valentines

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

Last year I loved my Valentines decorations in my downstairs bath. In fact they ended up being in there wayyy longer than valentines. So this year I decided to stick with the soft pink and just add some white a silver to cool things up a bit.

A couple of easy DIY’s were involved in this:

First the spray painted cinnamon sticks in arranged around the candle.

Second the pink artwork, I simply splashed some craft paint on canvas and played around a bit.

Finally the feathered wreath on mirror, I just hot glued a bunch of feathers on a styrofoam wreath layering as I went.

Other than that, all the decorations are 100% Christmas clearance items. Boy do I love making deals look pretty! What are you’re decorations looking like? Email us a pic we’d love to see!

Country Living Awesome February Issue

Monday, January 21st, 2013

Morning everyone, I hope you had a lovely weekend. I was not productive AT ALL… just VERY LAZY. It was perfect, and just what I needed to nip my sickness days in the bud!

Anyhow, while I was under the weather I enjoyed reading my mags, and can I just say that County Living blows the others out of the water every month. Each page is eye candy: fresh and original, interesting and inspiring. In their February issue, I ‘pinned’ at least 3 ideas that I’m hoping to use in our basement.

Here’s a glimpse of one of my favorite features ‘A Modern Spin on Cabin Decorating’, go HERE to see the whole article.

Isn’t that cabin amazing? I want to move in. The barn doors in the bedroom are something I’m looking at for the basement. A modern version of what we usually see, but I like the light wood and texture.

Are you in love?

Paperless Post Freebie Invites

Friday, January 18th, 2013

In my last catalog from Crate & Barrel I noticed a little ad mentioning Paperless Post. So I went to check out the link HERE, and found out the two companies have joined together to offer a FREE collection to their readers.

Aren’t their invites so cute and stylish? Perfect for that last minute get-together. This design is tempting me to host an Oscar party…

PS. Over Christmas we were playing a game when the word “catalog” came up, my 9 year old nephew asked what it was….scary how things are changing!

Sarah’s Organization Project: Bathroom Drawers

Thursday, January 17th, 2013

Morning friends! Today I’d like to share the first post from one of my big new year goals: to have a COMPLETELY organized home. This is a massive goal to keep on top of, so I’m starting little by little, and keeping you updated along the way.

My first task was my bathroom drawers. See here how I began organizing with little containers but they were too small and moved when I opened and closed the drawer…no good. :(

boxwood clippings_organized draw

By adding more containers ($1 for 3 from the Dollar Tree) I packed them in so they no longer moved around, and although they’re not the perfect match colour wise, they function perfectly together so it’s ok. I tend to always buy white or clear incase this happens!

Project cost: $1

Project time: less than 10 minutes

Project reward: utter bliss! I’m a simple girl!

Gift Idea: Deck of Cards, 52 Things I Love about You

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013

While looking for ideas for ideas for Valentine’s presents this year I stumbled upon this idea from Nicole at Visual Heart. I love the idea of a Valentine being a thoughtful token of love rather than huge, commercial presents, so thought this idea was perfect.

I picked up a deck of cards from the dollar store, a few binder rings at Target, and got to work.

I love this idea, not just for a significant other but for anyone you love. Can’t wait to celebrate the month of love :)

Gift Idea: Valentine Crush

Tuesday, January 15th, 2013

When Sarah gave these presents out for the kiddos, I thought of someone else who would enjoy a little orange fizz. Accompanied with a cheezy saying, it makes a cute little Valentine…

New Pillows for the New Year

Monday, January 14th, 2013

Pillows are the easiest way to switch up your rooms, and also a big bang-for-your-buck.

We recommend buying standard sized feather-down pillow inserts for extra luxury and comfort. They will serve you for years, and are very reasonable. Crate & Barrel have a nice assortment, and offer a $4.95 flat-rate shipping fee. 18″ and 20″ are the most popular pillow cover sizes around.

Now for the fun part:

target orange grosgrain $24.99 (whole pillow).

grey ikat 18″ pillow covers, set of two $38.

trina turk orange arches 18″ pillow cover $55.

multi-zig-zag in gray 18″ pillow cover $35.

orange velvet 20″ pillow cover $40.

crate + barrel grey chevron 18″ pillow $29.95 (comes with feather-down insert)

It’s apparent that I have a major orange crush! What colors and designs are you drawn to right now?

Feeling Fine with Clementines

Friday, January 11th, 2013

tangerine boardBrad is a huge fan of clementines and they are being consumed by the dozens right now in attempt to pack as much vitamins and minerals into our bodies during flu and cold season. I have been putting a peel down the disposal every night, as apparently citric acid helps lift grime. A side effect is a delicious-smelling kitchen.

In the bathroom, I have been loving this orange ginger soap. The scent is so fragrant in our poky bathroom, it feels like it is transformed into a spa. It smells SO good!

Bath and Body Works are currently having their semi-annual sale. Many items are 75% off and the Aromatherapy Collection is buy 2 get 1 free. I picked up this orange ginger sugar scrub to try..can’t wait to give myself a little pedicure with this.

Along with a cup of my favorite wild sweet orange tazo tea, I am feeling fine and literally in clementine heaven. What things are you enjoying this January?

Design Dilmma: Window Treatments

Thursday, January 10th, 2013

boxwood_clippings design dilemma banner

I have to admit I’ve been spending way too much time lately looking at window treatments.

The new house will have lots of windows, and treatments are on top of the to-do list.

My number one concern is a cohesive look when looking at the house from the outside. Ideally I would like every window to have moldings added (the windows will be totally bare without any casing), bamboo blinds as well as classic drapery panels…

white drapes + bamboo blinds from boxwoodclippings.com milkandhoneyhome.com

In reality, with budget and time being factors I need to start with something simpler. I need your help and your experiences of what you liked best…

Classic Panels: Easy, breezy and beautiful or annoying to open and close and ‘fix’ each time?

white panel curtains boxwoodclippings.comsavorhomeblog.com

Roman Blinds: All you need?

roman blind boxwoodclippings.comprettystuff.tumblr.com

Plantation Shutters: Expensive, but worth it?

boxwoodclippings_white plantation shuttersiwantiwantiwant.com.au

Bamboo Blinds: Inexpensive, but do they really keep the light out?

boxwood_clippings bamboo shadesmarcusdesign.blogspot.com

Can you tell I’ve given myself a headache? I’m trying to steer clear of the classic 2″ blind dust trap, but they are so affordable, easy and unoffensive to the eye. Maybe I should just start with these? Insights and thoughts please!

DYI: Newspaper Hearts on Lights

Wednesday, January 9th, 2013

I always get so sad taking down my Christmas decorations, so this year I went straight to decorating for Valentines.

The fairy lights in our dinning area really cozy up the place, so they’re officially staying till spring. I made these little hearts to dress them up for the season. They’re not only cute, but free to make and very easy!

boxwood clippings_newspaper heart3

Picture 3

If you’d like to make your own, all you’ll need is:

Fairy lights (I use icicle, currently on mega sale everywhere!)

A pair of scissors

An old newspaper or magazine

Marker or pencil

boxwood clippings_newspaper hearts 1

Simply draw your heart shape on newspaper, and cut. I like to do a few pages at a time to make it super fast. Then punch over lights, the paper rips easily since it’s so thin.

This is all I had the energy for on my sick day, hope you guys aren’t feeling yucks! Look after yourselves x.

Em’s House: “I have a foundation!”

We have a foundation! Unfortunately that’s all we have. It has been sub-zero degree weather around here, hence the bundles of clothing and no framing!

Hard to believe we’ll be moving in just a few months! Stay tuned…

Personalized Stationary from Minted

Monday, January 7th, 2013

We don’t know about you, but we dread January. It is so yucky; frigged cold and dark, long nights. Therefore, we always plan on things that we know will cheer us up. Being pumped about new goals, and January clearance is always high on the list, but this year we decided to treat ourselves to new stationary.

Ever since being very little we have been obsessed with stationary, and while we were looking at Christmas cards at Minted we also discovered their beautiful personalized stationary and couldn’t resist.

Within a few minutes we’d tried our monograms on several different designs, the only hard part was deciding which ones we liked best! We finally decided on these two pretties:

We are in love with our stationary, the quality and design is exceptional. They have definitely added a little cheer to our drab January and have inspired us to bring back the art of a hand-written note. You know how much we love to give personlaized gifts, and with so many design options to choose from we are loving this gift idea…
