Please, please, please take this advice. I’m a master gardener and see ALL THE TIME mistakes people make when building a new house. The plantings are ALWAYS too close to the house. You MUST allow for the growth of the plant, and proper plantings allow 2-3 feet between the plantings and the house. You should be able to walk between your mature shrubs and your house. This is important for air flow for the health of the plant, keeps moisture from being trapped against the house, and allows for proper inspection of your property for bugs and foundation issues.

Thus, if you are planting a boxwood, and it is supposed to be 3 feet wide at maturity, it should be planted about 4.5 feet from the house. I know it looks funny and bare at first, but trust me, you are saving yourself from problems later, like constant pruning because something is too close, or pulling out all the landscaping because yours has become too mature and ages the house. If you need inspiration, take a tour of a local mature garden you admire, and notice the space the mature plants take up. You can always plant some annuals and perennials (easy to move) to fill the space until the shrubs and trees mature.

Michelle, thanks for your advice! The landscaping will be done professionally, but I was planning to add a boxwood hedge to their plans. Thank you, thank you!

    Great advice!

Take care to supervise the professionals. They will place plants too close together and too close to your house, to make it look good now. It is less expensive in the long run to plan for the little plants to grow to their natural size than to put things close together so it looks good now and have to pull it all out again in 10 or 15 years.

So funny. We’re building a house now and I was searching for some images to determine if we wanted our gray house to have white garage doors or not and happened upon your site. It’s adorable. Turns out our wood floor color is similar too. We opted to not go the uber dark birch as I sense it may be hitting the top of its trend life. Will be fun to see the interior. We’re going with a yellow front door — SW decisive yellow. Thanks for the fun blog.
