$7 Thumbtack Artwork

In the fall, we always get the urge to glam up our homes a bit. As always, we wanted an easy project that only cost a little. We grabbed some gold thumb tacks at The Dollar Tree and a black piece of foam core and started tacking…

Didn’t it turn out fab?!

We used a lot of tacks…six packs! Plus the one dollar for the foam core, this project totaled only $7!

The foam core at The Dollar Tree is pretty thin, so the ends of the tacks do stick out at the back so it can’t be hung flush on the wall. Thicker foam core is available at other stores which would completely hide the pins, but we love the way it looks leaning on a piece of furniture.

Chic and cheap is hard to beat!

Woooow!! You really elevated both of those items! This is sooo pretty!! Seen a lot of thumbtack projects lately but this is the most creative, with the highest “wow factor.” LOVE!!

Did you have a template that you used for the actual design? I love this and want to replicate it but have no idea where to start without a predrawn pattern… any tips? Thanks!

Maria, the design was actually inspired by a dress I saw. It’s actually a lot easier than it looks. Just lines of about 10-12 tacks going up and down. Once your first row is done, it’s easier for the second, coz you just basically copy and paste manually! Hope this helps!

did you use different colors of thumb tacks? You mentioned you used gold but in the picture it looks like different shades of gold – bronze, rose gold, etc. Could be the lighting on the picture. Can you advise?

  7. Sarah Says:

Hi Kristy, Thanks for your question. The thumb tacks were all gold bought from the dollar tree, but a couple of packs varied in color so I just blended them in!

A few layers of Modge Podge over the pin tips in the back would probably protect the wall if you wanted it to be hung. Great project!
