Traditional Inspired Mid-Mod Home with Ikea

Did we tell you guys our sister Helen moved back to Utah from California?! We have been having way too much fun having our lady back for lunch dates and snuggles with the babies.

She has moved from a custom colonial-style home to a real 60’s fixer upper on the Provo bench. Walnut wall panelling, tiled ceilings and pink bathrooms…you get the picture!

We’ll be helping with the design process as she tackles this fixer-upper and using her traditional style to influence this mid-century home. We cannot wait!

Ikea is always our first stop in starting with any project. Their prices are exactly what we want to be spending and their style is amazing. Here are a few things on the list for this traditional inspired mid-mod home!

1. Almost every light in this house needs replacing and no where beats Ikea prices for pendant lights. Loving THIS large white pendant for only $39, and THIS smaller shiny black one. Basic and bold.

2. The Kivik sofa is amazing. It’s sturdy, comfortable and we love the modular pieces that you can mix and match to work in any space. Don’t even get us started about machine washable covers and the 10-year warranty!

3.  We’re pretty confident THESE tables will work in almost any living room. $59 for the pair!

4. The base of any room is the floor covering. THIS 7′ x 10′ rug is neutral and bold, and the perfect backdrop for any decor. It is also 100% wool, so we are hoping it lasts a long time. $249…crazy!!!

5. We need lots and lots of house plants in this space. Ferns and succulents, and we love THIS palm for only $12.

6. We love, love, love THIS cabinet. Is will be perfect with two lamps either end and a mirror int he middle, giving our sis the traditional look she likes while using modern pieces.

7. We can’t get enough nesting tables! THESE walnut veneer ones are a little splurge for Ikea, but are so perfect for this home.

8. Isn’t THIS side chair a beaut?! Love the lines of this piece.

Yes! LOVE that you plan to embrace the era, style, and “feel” of the home! A midcentury home that capitalizes on that look can really be a showstopper. Hate when people try to make a house into something it just isn’t, which I think happens all too often in MCM homes. Just like old Victorian houses usually contain antique pieces to highlight the overall “look”, I hope people can start to embrace the uniqueness in more modern homes. So much better than trying to pretend people won’t notice it’s not new. Embrace that blond wood, panelling, built-ins, etc! Auctions, estate sales, etc can have incredible steals on furniture, lamps, & accessories (incl planters!). LOVE that Ikea sectional sofa & sideboard btw…

Great picks, just one note regarding the sofa… $700 is only for one section of this couch, it’s a modular sofa that you can put together in different combinations… if you pick any other color from tbe drop-down menu under this couch it will show you on the picture which part of this sectional costs $700

    Thank you Joanna!

Yeah, Helen’s here! I like your design choices. Confession… I wish I bought a couch like the one pictured here. I love it!
